Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection Helps Ford Customers Avoid Frontal Crashes

Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection Helps Ford Customers Avoid Frontal Crashes
PEKIN, Illi. - Ford is always on a mission to become a leader in innovation and improve their customer's driving experience with the latest and greatest technology. With an incredible track record of some of the most advanced driver-assist features, Ford has found yet another way to raise the bar.

Debuting on the 2015 Ford Mondeo in Europe later this year is the company's latest pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection, which will help customers to avoid frontal crashes. With help from a radar and camera technology that scans the roadway ahead, the Pre-Colliision Assist can help drivers to avoid rear end collisions with other vehicles. If the driver does not respond to the system's warning in time, a full braking force will automatically be applied to help reduce the severity, or even eliminate, some frontal collisions.

The Pedestrian Detection helps to avoid pedestrians at reduced speeds with a windshield-mounted camera and radar near the bumper. The camera and radar feed the system information that allows it to distinguish the difference between people and normal roadside scenery and objects. Should a pedestrian be detected and a collision is anticipated, the driver will be alerted with an audible and visual warning. If the driver does not respond, the system will reduce the gap between brake pads and discs to improve brake responsiveness.

Although this system is advanced and extremely beneficial in unexpected situations, it does have limitations during nighttime, low and harsh lighting conditions, vehicle smoking in a different direction, and harsh weather conditions. Ford does not intend for the Pre-Collision Alert with Pedestrian Detection to replace the driver or the need of awareness. We should begin to see this system appear on other Ford and Lincoln products around the world in the upcoming months.
