Tips for Driving During Deer Season

Tips for Driving During Deer Season
PEKIN, Illi. - Oh, deer! It is the most active time of the year for our doe-eyed friends, putting us all at  greater risk for deer related crashes. As we get further into breeding and hunting season, this particular time of the year is exceptionally dangerous for those out on the roads. To help you avoid an unpleasant encounter with a deer, we are here to offer some tips for driving during deer season

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has reported that the likelihood of a person getting into a deadly deer encounter is higher within rural areas and on roads with speed limits of 55 MPH or higher. Regardless of what type of roads you regularly drive on, it is important that you remain extra aware while driving during this time of the season.

Tips for Driving During Deer Season:

  • Deer are the most active around sunset and sunrise, so it is crucial that you are particularly cautious while driving during these times of the day.
  • Deer travel in groups. This means if you see one, there is probably another one or two nearby.
  • If you are driving while it is dark out and there is no opposing traffic, use your high beams. This will help you to see deer's illuminated eyes or even a dark silhouette on the side of the road. If you happen to spot a deer, slow down immediately!
  • One of the MOST important tips: DO NOT SWERVE to avoid hitting a deer. By swerving you are more likely to create an even more serious accident with another vehicle, tree or other object. If you are about to hit a deer, brake firmly, stay in your lane, hold onto the steering wheel and bring your vehicle to a complete stop.
  • If you are in a deer-vehicle collision, pull off the road and turn on your emergency flashers. Stay in your vehicle and DO NOT attempt to approach the deer. Their hooves are sharp, powerful and very dangerous. Be sure to phone the authorities and contact your insurance agent.
